Are you stuck in a rut, doing the same things day after day after day?
Do you have a routine for your day? Maybe you get out of bed, go to the bathroom, let the dog out, feed the dog, make your coffee, exercise, meditate, make breakfast, take a shower, get dressed, pack the lunches, take the kids to school, then go to your job....
Do you find that after a while you are just tired of the monotony of it all?
Routines in and of themselves are not a bad thing. They are quite good. They help your mind stay settled while you are getting things done. Let's face it, you gotta eat and shower (at least occasionally), right?
But what would it be like for you to mix it up a little bit? I am talking something small like putting your make up on in a different way. Instead of putting your eye makeup on your right eye first, do your left eye. Whoa! I know that is crazy talk, but bear with me a moment. Think about something you do everyday like putting on socks and shoes. Notice today if you put your left sock on first or your right. Do you put both socks on then your shoes, or do you put on one sock, one shoe, then the other side? Do you drive the same way to work or school or wherever you go each day? Why not take a different route?
Is your mind kicking up a fuss yet? Our minds love keeping us safe and in the zone of our comfort. What about going to a new grocery store, or perhaps instead of going down the grocery aisles like you always do, do the exact opposite. Maybe get your frozen foods first. These little things we do a certain way day after day are our routines.
What would it be like to pick a couple of things and mix it up? A few weeks ago, I decided after I dropped my son off at school, I wanted to grab a cup of coffee and write in a cafe. I like the change of atmosphere from time to time. So, I was thinking about coffee shops close by his school, and there was one that I had never been to but always wondered what it was like.
So, after way too much thought about coffee shops, I decided that I would just go over there and give it a try. And guess what? The sky did not fall, and I had a pretty decent cup of coffee in a quiet atmosphere which was perfect for me to write in. But there was a moment of my mind kicking up a little fuss about going to a new place.
It is a funny example of how our minds can keep us stuck in a rut called routine. Just for today, do something you always do in a totally different way. I want to hear if it was super easy for you or maybe just maybe it was more challenging than you thought it might be.
Let's all breathe some new life into our daily grind!! Until we meet again...
