I am not a huge believer in New Year's resolutions, mainly because they are made from a drunken state on New Year's Eve. I always wonder why folks wait until January 1st. to change their lives. I suppose it is because you can continue doing what you know isn't good for you up until that magical date, when you will change and your life will be perfect. Well........how does that work for you? Do you really keep all of your resolutions? Maybe you exercise like a mad woman for three weeks, then stop. Maybe you begin a "diet" only to resume your unhealthy eating habits days later.
Resolutions are seldom made with a plan of action in mind. Making big life changes can be scary, and having a plan of action can really help you achieve what you say you desire. Just saying to your friends that you are going to be more positive or lose weight or eat healthier without the slightest idea of how you are going to do it, sets you up to fail. I am big on having a goal, having a plan of some kind, then taking action. Your plan need not be exact. There needs to be wiggle room for the magic to seep in. Just saying that you are going to exercise more, but not making room in your daily life for exercise, won't work. You know this, you know. When you are declaring to your friends and family, you know this.
Sometimes we think we need to change something, but we really don't want to. Own that! If you are happy where you are, great. If you are unhappy but afraid to change, awesome. If you are unhappy, afraid to change but do it anyway, you are a super star. It is feeling the fear, but doing it anyways that helps to propel you towards your goals. You are the one person who lives with you and your thoughts and feelings. You know if you are happy or not. Only you can change how you feel. No one can do that for you. No one. Only you. How empowering (or scary) is that knowledge?
So, with the new year looming close by, decide for yourself whether you are ready, willing and able to make a change or two. If you are, make a plan of some kind. If you aren't, own that. You are truly empowered to do, be, create and achieve anything you put your mind, body and soul to. Until next time...
